This was another project that came through . Laboratories running large volumes of samples need to streamline the process wherever possible. For some that can mean that a few seconds per operation turns into an hour saved throughout the day. In this case, the task is to fill sample holders (which we also machine in-house) with various powders for analysis. Running a few hundred of these each day makes loading them a seriously time-consuming activity so we were asked to design and fabricate some type of tool to make it easier. Some of the design elements are a certainly fancier than was really necessary, but the functionality of these little tools saves many hours of labor each week in the lab.

These have evolved somewhat since the first design.
- Some users wanted to be able to clean them with acetone. The epoxy holding the sapphire glass disk in place would not hold up to that so we’re using a different adhesive now.
- Some tolerances were slightly expanded to loosen things up. The close fit of the parts was actually slowing down the users a bit.
- A removable screen frame was added to ensure no clumps of powder would make it down the funnel.
